BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB: Supervise and perform technical work for the City of Decatur Library in operating the accounts desk and providing assistance to library customers. Duties include ensuring accountability for supervising part-time employees, providing assistance to library customers, circulating library materials, maintaining the customer database and collecting fines and fees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises and performs a variety of tasks at the accounts desk, including checking materials in and out, registering customers, preparing materials for shelving and maintaining records and tabulations.
- Supervises all part-time staff, including scheduling, training, assigning duties and participating in performance reviews. Opens and closes the library when necessary.
- Assists customers with routine requests and questions and instructs customers in using library computers and equipment.
- Tracks overdue materials, generates weekly overdue lists and monthly overdue notices, ensures that delinquent patrons are notified. Maintains all records pertaining to delinquencies and ensures that they are accurate and current.
- Maintains the integrity of the customer database. Creates and updates customer records.
- Maintains fines database and handles fine disputes. Collects fines and fees for overdue items, copier use, computer printouts and other service fees.
- Supervises the housekeeping tasks in the library, ensuring that library materials are returned to their proper location, stack order is maintained, tables are cleared, and chairs returned to their proper location.
- Supervises receipt, display and storage of periodicals and newspapers. Answers telephones and provides requested information or refers caller to appropriate staff.
- Maintains computer and equipment use statistics. Shelves library materials. Cross trains with other library staff and performs their duties in their absence.
- Regular attendance is required. Performs other duties as requested.
Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Formal Education: High School diploma or equivalent with training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. Associate’s degree or equivalent preferred.
Experience: Three years working in a library is required.
Other Requirements: Valid Texas Driver’s License. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Reading: Work requires the ability to read books, journals, reviews, literature, abstracts, financial reports, legal documents, computer screens, charts, tables, reference sources, budget documents, reports, memos, applications, policies and guidelines and manuals.
Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations.
Writing: Work requires the ability to write letters, summaries, reports and applications.
Complexity: Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards and precedents.
Managerial: Requires supervision of staff members. Assistance with director related activities as needed in the absence of the director.
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Salary range: $20.19 to $23.56/hr.
