Library Public Service Specialist
This position works as part of the University Library System (ULS) Public and Access Services team in Hillman Library providing knowledgeable and courteous service for library users in locating and utilizing materials and resources effectively. This includes providing outstanding library services to patrons at the Donald S. Wood Service Desk by establishing a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere while providing high-quality ready reference and directional assistance to library users in-person, on-line, or via phone and instant messaging. In addition, this position maintains primary job responsibilities for Hillman Library Public and Access services together with other team members. This encompasses managing request processing, ensuring timely delivery and digitization services, collaborating with colleagues to maintain item availability, providing support for physical collections, spaces, and stacks maintenance, coordinating facility moves and events, and maintaining organization within library collections in conjunction with student employees. Also includes participation with resource sharing both internally and externally, assisting in course reserve services, and troubleshooting technology-related issues. Moreover, handling billing and payment services to various degrees, ensuring smooth financial processes across Oakland ULS libraries. The position supports a welcoming and secure library environment by upholding library use policies in collaboration with building security and in communication with ULS colleagues.
Hillman Library - The tasks and responsibilities for this position must be performed on-site and in person; this position is not eligible for a flexible work arrangement or remote work
Works regularly scheduled hours at the Donald S. Wood Service Desk and other public service duties as assigned, providing comprehensive assistance to library users in-person, online, or via phone and instant messaging. Services include providing information about and assistance with collections, fulfillment, course reserves, interlibrary loan/document delivery and high-quality ready reference and directional information. Identifies and refers requests for customized or expert reference and research services to appropriate ULS colleagues, unit, or location. Inputs data related to service provision and transactions for quality assurance and assessment purposes. Represents the ULS in department-wide instruction or outreach initiatives to enhance student learning and increase the profile of the ULS for the university community. Includes "off service desk work" that contributes to the service desk. Jobs may include but are not limited to:
Request Processing: Monitor all request lists, including new acquisitions, and track item progress.
Process items for delivery and digitization services, ensuring timely fulfillment.
Collaborate with library colleagues to fulfill requests and receive/process mail delivery to ensure the timely availability of materials across delivery systems.
Manage user requests for library services and spaces, including locker access and PhD Dissertation writing Room.
Assist in facility move requests and event coordination. Maintain supply requests to ensure efficient operations at the Service Desk and communication facilities issues through the appropriate venues.
Maintain organization and accessibility of collections through daily maintenance and special projects
Coordinate intake of new materials and manage collection moves.
Provide support for stacks maintenance operations, including shelving, shifting, and shelf-reading.
Handle tasks such as processing new acquisitions, tracing missing items, and coordinating shifts and moves.
Manage receipt, processing, and access to library resources for university courses.
Participate in the ULS Course Reserve Community of Practice to address best practices.
Coordinate acquisition requests and address best practices in workflows in collaboration with subject specialist librarians.
Monitor and maintain efficient operations of ULS Resource Sharing services.
Serve as a contact for external partners and manage resource sharing requests.
Prepare library materials for delivery to partner institutions and maintain shipping records
Handle aspects of Resource Sharing requests for internal and external audiences.
Contribute to the assessment and improvement of unit workflows.
Monitor technology collections and troubleshoot problems.
Helps with training & support of Student Employees
Manage billing and invoices for delinquent accounts and oversee proxy patron accounts and special borrowers accounts.
Responsible for daily monetary transactions in conjunction with ULS Administration.

Work Schedule: (generally) Wednesday Sunday, 9:30am-6:00pm, - subject to change as department needs arise, with advance notice with occasional hours on weekends and University holidays as required.
