In close collaboration with the Director of Resource Management, Access, and Discovery, the Managing Librarian for Access Services provides administrative leadership for all aspects of Falvey Library's access services operations. Ensures the provision of excellent service and efficient operation of all access services functions including circulation, resource sharing, course reserves, stacks maintenance, remote storage, information requests, and library access. Creates policies and practices for access services operations in alignment with Library's and University's strategic direction.
In consultation with the Metrics & Assessment Librarian, responsible for assessment of access services operations to ensure they are effective and efficient at best meeting the needs of the Library's various constituents. Manages and develops select departmental staff and oversees portions of the collections budget.
Core responsibilities include provision of information services, circulation, resource sharing and delivery, course reserves, stacks maintenance, access services student hiring and supervision, library access, service desk staffing, user equipment support, and facility safety and security outside University business hours.

- Access Services. Leads and coordinates access services operations. Implements and documents strategies, policies, procedures, and tools related to library access services, and recommends updates to library service hours as needed and in consultation with the Director of Resource Management, Access, and Discovery. Collaborates with library and campus staff to ensure excellent customer service. Ensures proper maintenance of access services software, systems, and equipment. Manages circulation module of the integrated library system. Collaborates with the campus partners to ensure library safety and security outside of regular business hours. Fosters communication about access services matters across the Library. Serves as primary contact with Bursar's Office and Registrar. Develops, maintains, and applies a thorough knowledge of best practices, efficient workflows, and trends in access services.
- Manages Access & Collections Coordinators. Helps staff develop talents and skills in support of department operations. In coordination with the Director of Resource Management, Access, and Discovery, schedules opportunities for cross-training within departmental functional areas outside of the resource access team. Fosters a working environment that is inclusive, respectful, collegial, and conducive to learning and productivity. Leads and implements change to improve operations and motivates staff to collaborate and innovate effectively.
- Contributes to resource access team efforts including scheduling and staffing the service desk.
- Leads and contributes to programs goals, and strategic initiatives of the Resource Management, Access and Discovery department, Falvey Library, Villanova University, and professional organizations, as appropriate. Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
- MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
- 3+ years of professional experience in library access services.
- Collaborative approach to problem solving and working across organizational boundaries in service of user needs.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills with the ability to present information and ideas clearly and concisely.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, staff at all levels of the campus hierarchy, a diverse community, and vendors and other external partners.
- Strong customer service skills including the ability to be responsive to service needs of constituents in a courteous and consistent manner.
- Serious commitment to excellence, quality, accuracy, and attention to detail Demonstrated ability to set priorities, exercise flexibility in meeting objectives, effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adjust as circumstances change.
- Personal leadership through example coupled with ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment.
- In-depth knowledge of best practices, issues, technologies, and trends in the provision of access services in an academic library including resource sharing, copyright issues, services for people with disabilities, and customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership for the delivery of excellent customer service, innovative and high-quality access services.
- Demonstrated ability to develop policies and procedures that align with organizational needs. Understanding of the mission of a research university and of the changing educational environment.
- Experience in the use of research and analysis to drive strategy.
- Successful experience managing complex projects.
- Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
- Proven record of ongoing professional development.
- Ability to work with a wide and changing variety of computer applications, including Integrated Library System (ILS), digital library software, commercially available databases, spreadsheets, presentation software, etc.
- Proficiency with MS Office products and Integrated Library System (ILS).
- 5+ years of library access services experience demonstrating progressive responsibility in an academic library.
- 1+ years of personnel management experience.
- Transparent and inclusive leadership style.
- Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking for up to 4 hours at a time, frequent bending and lifting, able to lift to 30 lbs. of library materials while moving/walking, pushing and pulling a book truck (4 wheels) of library materials weighing between 50 and 100 lbs., ability to climb several flights of stairs on an occasional basis.
- The Library is open 90+ hours a week. May be required to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays on a regular or interim basis. Work schedules may vary during semester and summer sessions based on library hours of operation.
