BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB: Assists the Library Director with all youth services programs including curriculum, outreach, collections, activities, summer reading and current trends. Acts as the youth services point of contact for the library. Provides in-person and telephone reference and readers advisory with a focus on youth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.
1) Plans, implements and conducts age appropriate classes and events for families, children and teens that encourage reading, exploration, research, and learning and highlights the materials collection and electronic resources. Emphasis is placed on early childhood literacy programs, summer reading club, and after-school programs. Determines the information needs of our community as it relates to youth and implements the delivery of services to meet these needs. Coordinates the teen volunteer program. Assists in other programs as requested.
2) Performs collection development for children and teens; evaluates the library collection; recommends material selection, prepares orders for submission and weeds out damaged and outdated items. Select and maintain access to relevant databases for children and teens. This is done through reviewing professional literature, reviewing patron requests and other selection aids.
3) Creates, coordinates, collaborates and performs children’s and teen’s services for outreach to schools, daycares, youth groups and other organizations. Act as liaison for community groups.
4) Advises and assists library customers with online research, curriculum support and provides reference and reader’s advisory services for children’s and young adult’s literature. This is done through in-person, telephone and online resources.
5) Provides leadership and vision in the children’s and teen’s departments and organizes assigned staff and volunteers when necessary.
6) Stays current on trends and best practices in library services through continuing education, professional journals, professional conferences and committees.
7) Coordinate and assemble displays and exhibits for designated children and teen spaces. Update bulletin boards.
8) Communicate courteously and effectively with other employees, officials, and the public, in person, by telephone, and in writing. Participates in public relations activities by formally representing the library in the community. Interprets and applies city and library directives, policies, and guidelines.
9) Maintains statistics and prepares reports. Experience with computer software and technology, including the use of electronic catalog. Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft office.
10) Assists other library departments as needed. May be required to perform special assignments and similar or related work, as required, or as situation dictates. Work at the circulation desk as needed to perform all patron services. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Formal Education:
Position requires Master’s degree in Library Science (or Library and Information Science) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university.
Experience:
One year of library experience is preferred.
Other Requirements:
The City reserves the right to allow an employee to obtain licenses/certifications during a reasonable timeframe agreed to in writing (unless otherwise prohibited or limited by law) as a condition of continued employment. Failure to obtain the licenses/certifications as agreed will result in termination.
Valid Texas Driver’s License

Position Specific Knowledge and Skills:
* Knowledge and understanding of youth literature and understand current practices and trends in providing responsive library services to youth.
* Ability to work well with children and teens.
* Communicate effectively with parents and teachers.
* Work well with other library and city employees
* Understanding of practices, principles, and techniques of modern public library operation.
* Familiarity with a broad base of knowledge, publishers, reference tools, authors and both print and electronic information sources.
* Working knowledge of children’s and young adult authors.
FLSA: Non-Exempt, full-time Salary: $21.63 - $23.08/hr.
