Skokie Public Library is looking for an IT Assistant Manager to provide technical leadership for our network, servers, and virtual environments while guiding and mentoring a small team of IT Specialists.
In this role, you’ll help design, maintain, and improve the systems that keep our library running, from wired and wireless networking to security, backup and recovery, and core infrastructure services. You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues across the organization, lead complex technical projects, and occasionally step in for the Information Technology Manager, giving you the chance to grow your leadership skills in a supportive environment.
What You'll Do
As the IT Assistant Manager, you will:
Design, administer, and optimize wired and wireless network infrastructure
Manage and support firewalls, network security controls, VPNs, authentication systems, and remote access technologies
Administer Unix/Linux and Windows server environments, virtualization platforms, and enterprise storage systems
Monitor system performance, capacity, security, and availability while leading maintenance, upgrades, and lifecycle planning
Support Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, and related cloud services
Lead technology projects from planning through implementation while collaborating with staff, vendors, and stakeholders
Respond to complex infrastructure incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and implement long-term solutions
Administer backup and recovery systems and support disaster recovery preparedness
Supervise, mentor, and provide technical guidance to IT Specialist staff
Assist with departmental planning, budgeting, technology standards, and daily IT operations
Serve as a senior technical resource and assume designated responsibilities of the Information Technology Manager when needed
Requirements
What We're Looking For
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, training, and experience
Three or more years of progressively responsible experience supporting enterprise network and infrastructure environments
At least one year of supervisory experience or experience serving in a formal technical lead role
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with any of the following are strongly encouraged to apply:
CCNA, CCNP, or comparable networking certification
Experience designing and supporting enterprise wireless networks
Experience administering Microsoft 365 and cloud services
Technical Expertise
Successful candidates will have strong knowledge of:
TCP/IP networking, including IPv4, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, NAT, routing, and switching
Enterprise network security principles and practices
Firewall administration and network segmentation
Wired and wireless network architecture and troubleshooting
Unix/Linux and Windows server administration
Virtualization, storage, backup, and recovery systems
Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft Entra ID
Endpoint operating systems including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android
Scripting and automation tools
Infrastructure monitoring, documentation, and operational best practices
