Detroit Country Day School seeks a professionally-trained, Middle School Librarian. The Middle School Library offers students and faculty a modern, vibrant and welcoming environment, an extensive array of carefully-selected print and digital resources, and classroom instruction to support learning and inquiry. The Librarian equips students with 21st-century literacy skills and empowers students to be critical thinkers and ethical users of information. The Librarian exposes our community to a wide range of literature representing a diversity of cultures, viewpoints, and ideas, and the Librarian advances the mission of the school by preparing globally-minded students who are independent lifelong learners. Additionally, the Middle School Librarian is an integral part of a dynamic team with the Librarians from the Upper and Lower schools and works to fulfill the mission and vision of the Library Services Department. The Middle School Librarian is a full-time faculty position, reporting to the Middle School Director.

-Establishes and maintains a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for students and faculty
-Actively collaborates with colleagues to design and teach engaging lessons that integrate elements of information literacy, critical thinking, digital citizenship, creativity, and the use of technology
-Contributes to the culture of reading in the school, interacting with both students and colleagues to help make reading fun and engaging
-Ensures that students have ample opportunities to access the library for a variety of reasons, including book checkout, quiet study time, research support, and more
-Sets high standards for and teaches students and faculty about digital citizenship and ethical use of resources
-Plans special activities such as book fairs, author visits, and other reading events
-Directs the selection, acquisition, and weeding of all print and digital library materials to provide a balanced, updated, inclusive collection, representing student interests and curricular needs
-Manages the cataloging of all library materials and maintains the Destiny Library Catalog, LibGuides websites, and Canvas instructional pages
-Develops, implements, and evaluates the Middle School Library’s operational procedures and the school’s policies involving the library
-Assesses the effectiveness of the Middle School Library program on an ongoing basis, prepares statistical records and reports as needed.
-Manages the Middle School Library budget and demonstrates fiscal responsibility with expenditures and financial reporting
Additional Responsibilities
-May serve as a grade level advisor for 10-12 students
-Sponsors clubs and is actively involved with student life; may coach a sport or academic team
- Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth by remaining current in the fields of library and information science, education, and emerging technologies
-Participates in Library Services Department meetings and activities with the other campus librarians
-Represents the Library at Middle School Leadership Team meetings, faculty meetings, and other DCDS committees as assigned
-Maintains professional relationships and communications with DCDS families and students
-Maintains confidentiality with respect to student and family information
Requirements
The successful candidate must be a collaborative, service-oriented, tech-savvy librarian who is student-centered, energetic, and a lifelong learner.
Seeking a candidate with a Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited graduate program in library and information science who:
-enjoys working with 4th-8th graders and understands the unique needs of the age group
-demonstrates a commitment to equity and inclusion and to creating a welcoming library environment
-possesses excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interface cordially and effectively with students, families, administration, faculty, and staff
-has experience working with a variety of educational technologies, including the Google suite of applications. Experience with creating LibGuides pages and using learning management systems such as Canvas is preferred
-has at least three years of relevant library and information literacy teaching experience, preferred
