Company History

As one of the oldest and most successful social enterprises in the United States, FEI has established a track record of innovation in workforce resilience services.

In 1979 we saw the need to create the first national employee assistance program (EAP) network and partnered with the Xerox Corporation to make it a reality.
In 1984, we recognized a similar need with General Motors Corporation to create the first national managed care program for substance abuse.
By 1990, our customer focus led us to offer one of the first true integrated EAP and work-life programs.
In 1996, FEI advised the country’s airlines on new crisis standards.
In 2001, we proved our resilience by helping clients manage the impacts of 9/11.
In 2010, we helped security professionals ASIS International and BSI write new American National Standards for business continuity.
We carry on this innovation with our latest service offerings.

Originally known as Family Enterprises Inc., FEI operated as a division of Family Service America (the predecessor to the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities) until July 1, 1992. To better address the needs of corporate customers, FEI became a separate corporation whose purpose was to manage EAP, crisis intervention, and work-life services.

FEI's relationship with the Alliance continues today as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Unique in the industry, FEI was created to support and further the mission of the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities by delivering services and needed resources to family-serving agencies throughout the United States.

Our mission has expanded over the years to include serving many of America’s largest and best-known companies, their employees, and their employees' dependents. We believe that by strengthening families, we strengthen the workplace and the community.

Because of our considerable success in serving almost two million covered lives, FEI has developed into a leader in behavioral health. We retain a small-company culture, with genuine teamwork and enthusiasm for helping others.

As the first national network EAP in the country, FEI has unparalleled network resources. In fact, our family service affiliates average 85 years of experience in their respective communities, providing expert cultural and community resource knowledge for you and your employees. No other EAP combines the same powerful national resources with local presence.
