Description
Dean, R. Barbara Gitenstein Library
The College of New Jersey
Ewing, NJ
The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), a highly regarded regional comprehensive public institution, is seeking a Dean to lead the R. Barbara Gitenstein Library. TCNJ combines close faculty-student engagement, a rigorous liberal learning foundation, and a deeply residential undergraduate experience with the breadth, professional pathways, and public mission of a comprehensive university.
The Library is already deeply woven into the TCNJ experience. Students use the Library every day as a place to study, collaborate, conduct research, and connect with one another; faculty rely on its collections, expertise, and instructional partnership; and librarians reach more than 4,000 students each year through course-integrated information-literacy instruction. The Library’s faculty and staff have built a substantial record of service and excellence, and the institution has a strong foundation on which to build.
The next Dean will have the opportunity to help TCNJ fully realize what its Library can be within an institution whose distinctive educational model places extraordinary value on undergraduate learning, faculty-student engagement, research, and the teacher-scholar tradition.
The next Dean will be both a steward of that foundation and an advocate for the Library’s place in the academic enterprise. TCNJ’s scale and educational character create an unusual opportunity for the Library to serve as connective tissue across disciplines, schools, and forms of learning. The Dean can help deepen and broaden relationships with faculty and ensure that the Library is consistently understood as an academic partner whose resources, services, instruction, and operational expertise together advance the College’s educational mission.
Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are altering how students encounter information, conduct research, produce knowledge, and understand authorship and evidence. The next Dean will help the College think deliberately about the Library’s role in this changing environment by bringing the perspective of librarians and information professionals to questions that are increasingly central to teaching, scholarship, and student learning.
