THE POSITION
The City of Aledo is currently seeking a Librarian. This role is essential for delivering high quality public service and ensuring efficient daily operations at the Aledo Public Library. It directly supports community engagement and lifelong learning by assisting patrons, maintaining library systems, and fostering a welcoming environment for all visitors. Under the general direction of the Library Director, the Librarian provides comprehensive public library services by assisting patrons, coordinating programs and outreach, managing collections and volunteers, supporting library operations and technology, and collaborating with staff and community partners to advance the library’s mission and strategic goals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides courteous and knowledgeable assistance to patrons in the use of library computers, printers, equipment, the online catalog, and digital resources; delivers readers’ advisory and reference services to patrons of all ages.
- Communicates effectively and professionally with patrons, Library and City staff, and other stakeholders through in-person interactions, email, phone, and social media platforms.
- Responds promptly to inquiries, complaints, and concerns, escalating issues when necessary to ensure resolution and patron satisfaction.
- Assists with circulation of library materials by processing loans and returns, sorting and shelving items, locating and retrieving requested materials, and managing patron accounts with accuracy and confidentiality as needed.
- Coordinates the planning, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of library programs for all ages, collaborating with the library team to deliver summer, family, youth, general library, and outreach programs aligned with community needs and interests.
- Builds and maintains program-based partnerships with community organizations, schools, and local stakeholders, supporting the Library Director’s role as the primary community liaison by coordinating collaborative outreach that expands access to and awareness of library programs, services, and events.
- Collaborates with the library team to promote programs and services by creating and distributing print and digital content, managing social media, designing displays, and identifying additional promotional opportunities; serves as a liaison for the City Communications Team.
- Manages the library’s overall volunteer program, including school-year and summer volunteers, by coordinating recruitment, scheduling, and training in collaboration with the Summer Volunteer Program Coordinator and Human Resources
- Assists with the onboarding, training, and ongoing support of new Library staff and volunteers, ensuring understanding of library policies, procedures, service expectations, and operational workflows.
- Assists with collection development by evaluating library materials, selecting and ordering resources, assessing donations, weeding and updating collections, maintaining inventory, and supporting team members with collection management as needed.
- Assists in technical processing, cataloging, and ongoing collection maintenance to ensure materials are accessible and accurately represented as needed.
- Assists the Library Director with budget development and provides input into the creation of library strategic plans and goals to support and advance library priorities.
- Prepares written and verbal reports evaluating library collections, services, and operations, and assists with the ongoing review and revision of library policies and procedures.
- Helps manage and maintain Library software and hardware in coordination with the City’s technical support services.
- Maintains knowledge of standard library principles and ethical practices, including intellectual freedom, copyright, collection development, patron confidentiality, censorship, and Internet safety.
- Actively monitors and stays informed of emerging public library trends, best practices, and innovations at the local, state, and national levels to support responsive and forward-looking library services; attends professional conferences, meetings, and workshops as required.
- Provides support at City events such as Summer Blast, Christmas Tyme in Aledo, and other City-sponsored events as needed, including those occurring outside of regular business hours.
- Performs additional duties related to the daily operation and upkeep of the library as assigned.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of public library principles, practices, and procedures, including customer service standards, intellectual freedom, patron confidentiality, and ethical service delivery.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including patrons, coworkers, supervisors, community partners, and City staff.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service, with professionalism, friendliness, adaptability, and a solution-oriented approach.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to speak clearly with the public and staff, write routine reports and correspondence, and convey information in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply policies, procedures, safety rules, operating instructions, and other written documentation.
- Proficiency in the use of computers and related technology, including Microsoft Office products, email, internet applications, library automation systems, and digital resources.
- Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies, software, and emerging tools used in library and information services.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive situations with discretion and diplomacy.
- Willingness to collaborate, accept feedback, and support a team-based work environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT
Work includes prolonged sitting, as well as moderate lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, pulling, and pushing activities; manual dexterity; clear speech; and visual and hearing acuity. Work may require local travel for outreach events.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university required.
- Two (2) years of professional librarian experience preferred.
- Knowledge of public library services, programs, and collections.
- Customer service experience required; experience planning and delivering educational or recreational programs strongly preferred.
- Experience with nonprofit work or grant-related activities is a plus.
