Job Summary
This position is responsible for implementing programming for the children and youth of Hood County and marketing these programs for the purpose of introducing young patrons to this Library, ensuring the quality of the Juvenile and Easy collections of books and media, and performing a variety of job tasks and responsibilities to ensure effective operation of the County Library.

Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Directs programming for children through planning and implementing story hours and other events that encourage children and teens to use this library.
- Plans and implements the marketing and outreach of these programs by developing venues and displays that will publicize events to children and their parents in a variety of creative ways.
- Analyzes the Juvenile, Easy, Tween and Teen collections and develops a comprehensive Collection Development plan that contributes to the library’s general Collection Development Plan, which is updated as needed.
- Updates and maintains the Juvenile, Easy, Tween and Teen collections of books and media by selecting, weeding out, and ordering titles using patron recommendations, review journals, children’s recommended lists and book award lists.
- Purchases additions to said collections by working with vendors that offer the library the most favorable discounts and makes the most cost-effective purchases from a budget amount assigned by the Director, while following all approved County purchasing procedures.
- Keeps daily statistics of personal activities to track program performance levels.
- Supervise shelvers on a routine basis as needed and assist in their yearly job evaluation.
- Performs other miscellaneous administrative tasks, such as assisting in the recruiting and interviewing of new applicants and recommending new hires.
- Assists in planning future programs to accommodate growth and changing interests.
- Support and carry out daily procedures and operations of the library in the absence of the Library Director, along with the Office Manager.
- Works within a team environment by interacting with library staff, County employees and groups such as Friends of the Library, the Library Board, and other stakeholders in a professional and responsive manner.
- Assists the Director in preparing the annual budget for all line items related to the Juvenile, Easy, Tween and Teen area of operation
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
- Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year of public library experience.
- Some experience working with children is preferred.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of library automation databases and relevant procedures and able to work independently within these systems.
- Knowledge of professional library practices and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
- Ability to work as a functioning part of a team.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patrons in a one-to-one setting and interact in a professional and responsive manner.
- Ability to prioritize job responsibilities to ensure that unparalleled patron service is delivered.
- Ability to share knowledge with said team and provide backup for job duties as assigned.
- Ability to follow and enforce library policies and procedures.
- Ability to assign work, redirect and assess the work of employees and volunteers.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings and weekends.
Physical Demands
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: ability to make continuous or repetitive arm/hand movements, operate a computer keyboard, and bend and/or stoop repeatedly.
